music and reading

I’m finding now that I’ve stopped listening to music while I’m reading on the subway and this allows me to concentrate and read more.

Oddly enough, I think this is something that would apply to other situations. That if you listen to music because you think it makes you more productive in what you’re doing, it probably doesn’t. Unless you’re exercising or jogging, but if you’re doing something that requires using your brain, thinking and reflecting, then music doesn’t help all that much.

Or so it seems.

  1. okay first of all, I just saw your “copyright” parody thingy. It’s great and I’ll probably plagiarize it. But then again, that’s okay according to you.

Secondly, music always distracts. I specifically use it when I want to drown out other pervasive thoughts. Or when I just want to listen to some good ol’ backstreet boys. *giggle*

  2. I’ve never understood how people can read/work/write while listening to music. And I’m going to sound strange, but it’s always felt a little disrespectful to me. What? I *told* you I was going to sound strange.

  3. Music plus reading material has always worked for me. However, I must say that the tempo of the music really matters…more low key stuff for literature, while some rock for physics…:)
