letters from iwo jima

I saw both Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima this weekend.

All I can mainly say is wow. I actually have not seen too many war films for me to be able to draw comparisons. I should probably see Saving Private Ryan and some other war movies (any recommendations?).

I like the perspective that Flag of Our Fathers takes, how it depicts the war on the ground itself and how it tackles what it is to be a “hero”. But at the same time, I thought it was somewhat confusing to follow with the Doc character narrating and his son interviewing. Perhaps that could have been better handled, though I don’t know how.

Letters from Iwo Jima was just unnerving. I wonder if the downplay of colour in the movie was a pre-production or post-production decision. Seems to have worked out really well. I liked the fashion in which this story was told better, and I suppose the letters narrative makes it more compelling. The story itself here was more gripping than Flags, though perhaps it is this way by design? Letters deals with questions of honour (suicide), and the treatment of POWs and leadership etc.

All together so well directed and edited. I need to dig up more Clint Eastwood movies. This guy is unreal.

you complete me

“What would I do without you?… you… you complete me!”, says the Joker to the Batman.

Let me start off my saying that I’m itching to go see it again.

Christopher Nolan is beyond genius, he is gifted. In both script writing and direction (and editing I’m sure). This movie was mind-numbingly good.

Beyond just a super-hero movie, it was one of the best thrillers I’ve seen in a long time. I was constantly on the edge of my seat.

I saw Batman Begins the night before and I liked it a lot. But The Dark Knight just took it up several notches.

Aaron Eckhart was very good. I liked him in “Thank You For Smoking” as well. I think I’ll look up more Eckhart movies. Oh, I absolutely loved the Two-Face look. Magnificent! The thought that went into the design of this thing. Unreal. Blew me away.

Heath Ledger was superb. And very soon I’ll run out of adjectives. Just a brilliant performance. I do wonder though whether he will win any awards simply on account of him being not alive. Would he have otherwise? I think he was great and definitely worthy of winning awards for this performance. The look and feel and the nature of the man… was just creepy. The delivery of the lines was slow and methodical when it needed to be, and crazy to boot.

I didn’t notice Katie Holmes was gone. Maggie is a better actor no doubt, but it’s not like that character had much depth in the first place.

Christian Bale was Christian Bale.

Again, Nolan is a mastermind. The movie is very fast paced and the tension is very well placed. As I said, I was on the edge of my seat.

If you haven’t seen it, go watch it. Watch Batman Begins right before it for the best experience. I’m itching to go see it again.

10/10

p.s. i am never going to see a movie with you again. it’s over.

wall-e

absolutely fabulous! =D

I like stories that depict the future in certain ways. Immediately my mind starts to assess the gaps and realize how close we actually are to such a future. No matter how many times, no matter how many movies this happens in, I can’t help but have this visceral reaction to seeing a sparsely populated planet Earth.

Wall-E starts off with exactly that future. Empty. Desolate. Lone. Void of any organic life. I loved it!

Without actually giving out any details, I think the movie could have ended about 5 minutes before it did. And if it did, it would have taken the movie to an entirely different level. But I understand this is a Disney movie targeting children. I have come to terms with this.

Oh, one of the things I noticed during the movie was that I was laughing a good 2 to 3 seconds before everyone else. Either I was seeing into the movie more than was there, or everyone else was just slow that day.

Yes, if you haven’t seen it, you should go see it.

9/10

p.s. thanks for asking me out to see it. besides just talking about it, i might not have actually gone to see it otherwise.

manhattan

Name: Manhattan
Directed By: Woody Allen
Written By: Woody Allen, Marshall Brickman
Type: Romance, Comedy
Year: 1979
Starring: Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, Mariel Hemingway

I thought Match Point was really good (might have just been the English accents though =P ), and Scoop was just about okay. The older Woody Allen movies I’ve only caught bits here and there on television (when I used to watch TV on TV). It’s like watching a bunch of conversations. I love that feel in a movie. “Real people” just talking, with breaks and pauses and stutters, has that improv kind of feel to it. Of course, since these are also written by Woody Allen, there are awesome one-liners and plenty good many-liners. Kinda how I would want to make a movie.

I have no idea how to rate this. Or any of the older Woody Allen movies. I really like them. I really do.

I’m very interested in the movies that Woody Allen acts in as well. Again, I am totally drawn by how one person can write, direct and act in the same production.

I would love to get my hands on the screenplay/script of Manhattan, or any of the older Woody Allen movies.

Next to watch: Manhattan Murder Mystery (because I remember watching bits of this on TV, it was funny), Everyone Says I Love You (Edward Norton), Annie Hall (said to be one of his best).

movies you should watch

After attempting to watch a number of movies that just didn’t work out, I barely watched any movies up until a few days ago.

This reminded about the good movies out there that people generally don’t watch because they’re not popular. I hate it when people make blanket statements about Bollywood films all being crap, as if Hollywood makes better movies. People just don’t watch the right films, and don’t stop watching the wrong films.

Iqbal – On the surface it seems like just another sports movie. Which it is. It seems to follow the same formula for the most part. But it’s filmed and paced very well. My favourite character was Khadija, played by Shweta Prasad. Shreyas Talpade was very good, but Shweta Prasad was fabulous! Wonderful acting all around. 9/10.

Khosla Ka Ghosla – I enjoyed this movie a lot. Loads of fun. Real people with real issues. Good songs as well, “Ab Kya Karenge Bhai” by Adnan Sami taking the cake. It’s extra good because the song applied to both the father and the son in the movie. This is one of those movies you know in the first 10 minutes that it’s going to be good. If nothing else, there is one particular scene that makes the movie worth watching. 9/10.

Ramji Londonwaley – Hahahahahhaa. Enough said. But I’ll say some more. The movie is rough around the edges, but still has a dreamy quality to it. There are multiple hilarious sequences, but then there are also sequences where you doubt the director’s abilities. Almost as if it was directed/edited by two different people. All in all, a very fun movie. 8/10.

Main, Meri Patni Aur Woh – Another fun movie. Rajpal Yadav actually having to act more than his usual roles, and he comes through. Good songs as well. 8/10.

Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II – Generally I would feel odd about a movie like this. Because it seems to have been heavily inspired by Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and Guy Ritchie’s Snatch. But WBHHP2’s film makers come out and acknowledge their inspirations (the mention the Coen Brothers). All the parts that you need to see are in the same movie, so don’t worry about the part 2 tag. It’s a very well made film, with great performances by all the main actors. Prashant Narayanan was great in his role, but needs to appear in more movies. Sandhya Mridul (Rani Mukherjee’s sister in Saathiya) was great as well, I think she’s a very good actor. Arshad Warsi was hilarious. This really was a well made movie. 9/10.

Dor – Another one by Nagesh Kukunoor. Must watch. 10/10.

Kaun – I couldn’t walk away without throwing in a Ram Gopal Varma movie in here. I loved this movie because of the situation it was made under. Just three actors and one location. A great story that was very well directed. Manoj Bajpai has to be my favourite actor. 9/10.

There are a bunch of movies I’m missing here. But if there are any here you haven’t seen, then this is a good start.

neeli chatri – blue umbrella

The Blue Umbrella, directed by Vishal Bharadwaj, is too much fun.

How does one write the screenplay, compose the music and direct the movie? Fascinating!

I thought the cinematography was very interesting, although dizzying at times. But it plays part in the storytelling process, which I thought was masterful. That’s the aspect I enjoyed most about the movie. The way it tells this story. All this for an umbrella, haha, but the setup and the follow through were really well executed.

Pankaj Kapoor was brilliant. The kids could have been a bit better.

I enjoyed the movie a lot.

9/10

no

Krazy 4 – I got 20 minutes in, until the “item number” song. sorry, you lost me there. I thought the intros of the characters were pretty good, direction and camera work seemed to be done well. But… no.

Black & White – I’m not sure why I kept giving this movie a chance. The new kid, Anurag Sinha, acted well for the role he was portraying. BUT… the second time he shot someone for saying something, I had to stop watching. no.

Race – I wasn’t really interested in watching this one at all, but people kept saying good things about twists and turns and all. This movie lasted 10 minutes. Anil Kapoor didn’t even finish his intro-narration, and I had no interest in the characters. Yes, Saif Ali Khan jumps off a hot air balloon into an unmanned car, falls directly into the driver’s seat and stops the car right just before it comes to the edge of a cliff. Ummm… no.

Hot Fuzz

Name: Hot Fuzz
Directed By: Edgar Wright
Written By: Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg
Type: Romance, Drama
Year: 2007
Starring: Nick Frost, Simon Pegg

Absolutely fabulous!  Technically brilliant! and sometimes it’s even funny.

It’s just super awesome the amount of thought that went into the making of this movie. You can feel it right from the starting frames. The precision and attention to detail definitely stands out. The shots are so well designed and placed and paced. This movie could be studied in movie making classes and whatnot. I think it’s that good.

I’m sure with a second viewing of the movie folk would notice all sorts of things they missed in the first viewing.

I thought this movie was technically better than it was funny. Don’t get me wrong here, there is much funny in the movie, but I remember laughing more freely and louder while watching Pirates of the Caribbean:  Dead Man’s Chest (the second movie).

Company

 From August 2003:

Name: Company
Directed By: Ram Gopal Verma
Written By: Jaideep Sahni
Type: Action, Crime
Year: 2002
Starring: Ajay Devgan, Vivek Oberoi, Mohanlal, Manisha Koirala, Antra Mali

Company is about the Bombay (Mumbai) underworld.
The movie’s focus is on the relationship of Malik Bhai (Ajay Devgan) and Chandu (Vivek Oberoi), how it develops and deteriorates.

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen, in both Hollywood and Bollywood.
Directed to perfection with acting that’s no different. The movie has only one song and there are no useless scenes in this movie. I cannot say enough good things about this movie. If you haven’t seen it already, then go watch it. If you don’t like it, well that’s just too bad then.
Ajay Devgan is wonderful as Malik Bhai. Vivek Oberoi plays his role to the t, you’ll be surprised that it’s his first movie. Antara Mali plays a completely deglamourized role and does a great job of it.

no less.
