listening to Mukesh…
Note: As I was writing the post, I kept discovering Mukesh songs that I really like that I haven’t heard in a long time. So the list below isn’t really complete. But these are the songs I listen to first if I want to listen to Mukesh songs. End Note.
I’ve been listening to a lot of remixed songs (Hindi) lately. Not one of those, “I’m going to remix my own song that I made 15 minutes ago” songs. But songs that are very very old, 15+ years old.
In either case, I’ve gone back to listening to the real oldies. So when I feel I’m in the mood for Mukesh, I listen to:

It actually took me a while to understand the poetic nature of that stanza.

anything that Mukesh sings in the song. I love the rhythm and the flow of this song. I only have the Mukesh bits of the song memorized.
Not that memorizing a song is an accomplishment, but these are Hindi songs after all…
Pirates of the Caribbean Series
[Curse of the Black Pearl] [Dead Man’s Chest] [At Worlds End]
Okay, I’m getting as many opinion pieces on movies as I can while the Oscar buzz in my brain lasts.
Pirates! I don’t think I’ve laughed out loud so hard in a theatre before (Dead Man’s Chest), (I saw the first one on DVD).
I know I will instantly like “At Worlds End”. This is not like the Matrix where everything gets ruined by the sequels. I liked “Dead Man’s Chest” as much as I liked “Curse of the Black Pearl”. In fact, “Dead Man’s Chest” had more piraty stuff than the first one. If you’ve played the Monkey Island games back in the day, you know what I’m talking about. The wheel fighting scene is an example of this… hahaha.
Plus, there’s Johnny Depp. I’ve been told I have a man crush on Johnny Depp. This is true.
This is the movie that makes me want to say “savvy” and “love” at the end of my sentences, even when they don’t really apply.
I’ve seen both movies multiple times, and each time is worth it.
Anyone who dislikes any part of this series is clearly not intelligent… and clearly they’ve never been to Singapore.
The Departed
This movie rocked. Literally.
The only Scorsese movie I saw before this was “The Aviator”, which was a good movie. But it wasn’t a great movie.
The Departed was a great movie. A good plot, acted out by very good actors. Mind you, I’m not a big fan of Jack Nicholson or Leonardo DiCaprio. I am however a big fan of Matt Damon. But they all delivered great performances.
Definately deserving of it’s Oscar victories.
If I had the time, I would definately go see it again.
Firefly
Firefly was the awesomest television show ever. It’s a shame it was canceled after just 14 or so episodes.
The show is set in the future where people have moved to a separate solar system and travel from planet to planet using space ships and all.
What I liked about the show is how real it keeps itself. There are no aliens. The conflict is between man and man (and some women, actually plenty women).
There’s comedy, drama, plot and character development all blended so well you won’t know what hit you. The way the show was filmed was wonderful as well. In fact, I believe shows like Arrested Development and Battlestar Galactica learned lessons from the way Firefly was filmed because I see so many similarities.
My favourite episode is probably ‘Out of Gas’. It has that quote, “Everybody dies alone.”

The Prestige
Instantly one of my favourite Hollywood movies.
There are so many layers, so many ways to interpret events that it’s beautiful. Great acting, wonderful direction. It really goes into how magicians think and how things are from their end. It’s a great movie for everyone, but if you do magic, you can relate more to it. It doesn’t make me say, “hah, that’s not what magicians go through”.
Two quotes really stand out for me during the movie:
“Never show anyone. They’ll beg you and flatter you for the secret, but as soon as you give it up, you’ll be nothing to them. You understand? Nothing. The secret impresses no one. The trick you use it for is everything.”
I half agree with this. Some people are just after the secret and then the magic means nothing to them. That sucks. Would you be disappointed if you saw the notes to Bach’s music? I think the secrets elevate the art. The secrets should not make the magic. Magic is about the experience, not just about the actions.
I loved this quote from the movie:
You never understood, why we did this. The audience knows the truth: the world is simple. It’s miserable, solid all the way through. But if you could fool them, even for a second, then you can make them wonder, and then you..then you got to see something really special.. you really don’t know?..it was..it was the look on their faces..
ah… the look on their faces, the look in their eyes… magic…
goal:
any time I meet friendly people, I’m doing magic for them. No longer shall I bring out the cards and wait till people ask me to do something. I will force magic upon the world.

It’s Saturday, and I haven’t watched much television all week. This is the most I’ve fallen behind.

I’m scared…
I haven’t really truely touched code in such a long time, that I’m scared to go back to it. I’ll open my IDE, and just stare at the code. Afraid to make any changes. It’s like a small child lost in a park, you like the park, but you’re lost. And so you’re scared, even in a place like a park.
I’m all talk now. “I used to do this, I used to do that”… “I have the potential to do such and such”…
talk is cheap, and I’m all talk…
